DAKOTA TIWAHE SERVICE - POST MAJORITY UPDATE
Post Majority Worker
Hello, my name is Karlie Farrow, I am a Anishinaabe women from Netmizaaggamig Nishnaabeg First Nation along the lakes of Robinson Superior territory. Spirit name Giiwaadin “North Wind” in Ojibway. When given this name, I was told I was meant to help our people and as the Post Majority Worker for Dakota Tiwahe Services, I believe I am doing just that.
I have been employed with the agency for over 2 years and as of April of 2025, I started a new position with the agency as the Post Majority Worker. Post Majority is a new program for our agency; the program provides wrap-around supports to our young first nation youth and young adults between the ages of 18-26, it is voluntary and chosen by young adults transitioning out of care into adulthood.
The 8 Transitions to Adulthood Pillars
Financial – Youth in care deserve to have a financial starting point that is above the poverty line and allows them to pursue their career interest and dreams.
Educational & Professional Development – Every young person should experience an environment where they can learn and grow in ways that are meaningful to them and at their own pace.
Housing – Every young person should have place they can call home, without strict rules and conditions to abide by.
Relationships – Every young person should have people in their life that they can count on unconditionally and interdependently. Youth in care need to feel that they belong, have worth and are valuable members of their communities.
Culture & Spirituality – Every young person should be connected to their culture and spirituality. In ways that are meaningful to them, safe, and at their own pace.
Health & Wellbeing – Every young person should be provided with timely ongoing services and benefits that support their lifelong health and wellbeing. These supports need to be offered within a trauma-informed, nonjudgmental harm reduction approach without significant waiting times.
Advocacy & Rights – Every young person should have their rights respected and should experience environments where their voices are heard, and their silence is addressed holistically.
Emerging Adulthood Development – Every young person should experience environments that cultivate personal growth and development as they transition into adulthood.
Post Majority Support Services Statistics
The Dakota Tiwahe Services began their Post Majority Program in April 2025. Currently the program for Tiwahe is still in the beginning stages and will continue to develop its Post Majority program. The program works on goals identified by the young adults, ensuring that their individual aspirations, needs, and priorities guide the direction and focus of the support & services provided. The Post Majority worker often helps problem solve new adult situations the young adult has not experienced before and helping young adults navigate barriers that can interfere with obtaining their goals.
Message to Young Adults
These 11 young adults who are currently participating in the Post Majority program have shown self-drive, motivation and dedication towards their future. It takes a lot of strength and character to stay motivated, these young adults on this journey should be very proud of themselves.
As the Post Majority worker, it is exciting and rewarding to be a part of the program, but the most rewarding part is when a young adult achieves their goals or has taken another step closer to their desired accomplishment.
Atomic Habits: A slight change in your daily habits can guide your life to a very different destination. Making a choice that is 1 percent better or 1 percent worse seems insignificant in the moment, but over the span of moments that make up a lifetime these choices determine the difference between who you are and who you could be. Success is the product of daily habits, not once in-in-a-lifetime transformation. – James Clear
